One of the great things about college football is the rankings. Every week the fans get to see who the top 25 teams are and teams always know where they stand. While there are some major flaws in the system, for example, the influence preseason rankings have towards future rankings, it is still a good way for fans to understand how good or bad a team is. I have long wished a ranking system existed in the NFL but for the time being a made up power ranking will have to do. Below is how I would rank the teams in the NFL as of now. I want to point out that to make my system a little less biased I do not take into account what teams were picked to do in the preseason or what Vegas has their Super Bowl odds at. This is strictly based on how well the teams look on the field against their competition to this point in the season.
The Broncos only real test so far this year was against Baltimore and they passed it with ease. Peyton Manning seems to be playing at a level never before seen. First real test will be week five when they travel to Dallas to face a defense that could potentially present some problems for the Broncos.
The Seahawks are definitely the most balanced team in the NFL right now. They have a great running game, great passing game, great passing defense, great defense against the run, and they are even good on special teams. This week they travel to Houston in what is a very intriguing matchup.
The Saints look like a team on a mission. The defense looks ten times better than last years defense and if they keep this up the Saints are a real Super Bowl threat. This week they face the Miami Dolphins on Monday night football and I think the Saints will show the nation they are for real.
The Chicago Bears are a tough team to figure out. In one half of a game they look average at best. Then the next half they look like they could play with and beat Seattle. Their win against Cincinnati now looks like a big time win but this week their defense has the tough task of slowing down the Lions.
5. Miami Dolphins
The Miami Dolphins are flying below the radar and I’m not sure why. They won at Indianapolis and then came home and beat the Atlanta Falcons. No team has more impressive wins in back to back weeks than the Dolphins. Their reward? Having to travel to New Orleans and face the undefeated Saints on Monday Night football.
The Bengals are a poor man’s Seattle Seahawks. They aren’t great at any one phase of the game but they are very good at it all. AJ Green is a stud at receiver that has to be double teamed and the Bengals front four is truly special.
The Patriots have slopped their way to a 3-0 record by beating three bad teams. Once Rob Gronkowski comes back and then Danny Amendola after that they Patriots will be back to the Super Bowl contenders they are every year.
The Chiefs are number 8!?!?! Yes that is correct. The Chiefs strength of schedule would rate pretty low but I do think Dallas will end up winning around 10 games and making the playoffs so that helps. The Chiefs defense is one of the best in the league but how far can a great defense take you in today’s NFL? The Chiefs need to get a win against a drowning New York Giants team so they can go into week five undefeated and facing off against a tough Tennessee Titans team.
The Colts are very good and getting better. Trent Richardson is perfect for this offense and with Andrew Luck this offense looks hard to stop. The Colts get an easy win this week against Jacksonville but then go on a very rough stretch that goes Seattle, at San Diego, Denver, then at Houston. If they can split those four games watch out for the Colts.
10. Baltimore Ravens
Remember after the season opener when we all thought the Ravens were terrible after being dominated by the Broncos? Turns out the Broncos are on a path to greatness and the Ravens are right where they want to be. They have improved every week and just finished destroying the Houston Texans.
11. Houston Texans
Teams 11 through 16 are all interchangeable. They all have lots of talent; have lost to good teams, but also have some bad losses.
Packers should have no fear because last time I checked Aaron Rodgers is still healthy
13. Atlanta Falcons
Losses to two of the top 5? Don’t worry still a chance at 10 or 11 wins.
14. Dallas Cowboys
Cowboys are good and play in the worst division in the NFL. I see a home playoff game in Dallas’ future.
15. Tennessee Titans
Don’t know what to say about this team, they look good and I didn’t see it coming. Could very easily be 3-0 if not for a crazy OT loss to Houston.
16. Detroit Lions
I bet on Stafford to lead the league in passing yards and if he does the Lions have a shot at the playoffs.
Unless Vernon Davis and Anquan Boldin stay healthy, Kaepernick and the 49ers won’t make the playoffs.
18. New York Jets
This is another head scratcher for me. I guess I should know by now the media in New York always exaggerates how good or bad a team is.
These next three games (Dallas, at Oakland, Indianapolis) will determine if the Chargers are a top 10 pick team or a playoff contender.
I’m not ready to write this team off yet but if they lose either of the next two games (at Arizona or at Minnesota) their playoff chances become slim.
21. St Louis Rams
Time is running out for Sam Bradford
22. Buffalo Bills
Same old inconsistent Bills.
At least their offense is fun to watch?
Not sure how they beat Detroit. Feel bad for Larry Fitzgerald.
25. Cleveland Browns
Is Hoyer the answer at QB? Probably not but at least he may make them watchable… when they come on the Red Zone
O how the mighty have fallen. Could Tomlin be coaching for his Job?
Ponder is bad, really bad.
Shanahan needs to go.
29. Oakland Raiders
Maybe Pryor isn’t so bad?
30. New York Giants
Worst team in worst division is not something the New York fans and media will let slide.
What did Darrell Revis get himself into?
