Nick’s Chiefs Briefs: Week 9

That was a tough loss in one of the ugliest NFL games I’ve ever witnessed.  It’s games like that which make me think that this team is not as good as it’s record.  Fortunately for the Chiefs, they don’t have to be as good as their record as long as their record gets them into the playoffs.  Results are what matter in sports.  Even though the Chiefs lost, they are still in first place in the AFC and miles ahead of where I thought they would be at this point.  I’ve done all of the heavy lifting and scoured the googletubes to find you the most interesting Chiefs tidbits from around the web.  So, let’s grab a glass of brandy and get down to our Briefs.

  • I’ve never been a big consumer of football news on the internet, but it seems to me there is a real dearth of information and quality writing on the NFL out there.  Am I missing something?  Maybe I’m used to the world of baseball where there are literally thousands of people putting out quality content.  There are some good Chiefs blogs I visit, but outside of that I haven’t found anything worth reading.  Any suggestions?

  • Jeremy at Arrowhead Addict sums up pretty well the feeling around Chiefs fans after the Raiders game.  Basically: That game against Denver is kind of an all-in proposition.  I hate to put too much emphasis on one game, but in terms of fan feelings and media interest; he is right.

  • It’s great to see that former heavyweight boxer Butterbean has found a new job, but why is it he goes by the name Tom Cable?
    .
  • Andrew Gaug at the News Press in St. Joseph writes that the Chiefs sales tax figures disappoint.  Nobody should be shocked that the impact of a professional sports team is over-stated in an attempt to get free tax dollars.  It happens every single time.  I’m sure there was positive impact from the Chiefs fans going to St. Joseph to watch training camp, but it’s only a few weeks a year.

    • You know, I really do like the simplicity of the Raiders’ uniforms.  Its a nice classic look and an iconic logo.  They really are like the Chiefs in that way.

    • Derrick Johnson inked a new 5 year deal with the Chiefs with $15m in guaranteed money.  He was my preseason prediction for defensive player of the year and the guy has absolutely brought it this year.  It’s a well earned contract.

    • Am I the only one who thinks that Tamba Hali is being held on every single play?  Is there some reason that the refs never blow the whistle on guys holding him?

    • Apparently there is a great barbershop in Overland Park which cuts the hair of a bunch of NFL players including former Chief Tony Richardson.  It seems like a cool place, I may give it a shot sometime.

    • In this day and age, do we really need to have the referees come out and measure using the chains?  How hard would it be to put a laser on the sticks and if the ball breaks the laser its a first down?  Is there some reason this isn’t done?  Watching the measurement is another of many time wasters in the NFL, however this one doesn’t involve commercials so I can’t explain it.

    • KC Chiefs Blog asks “Will the real Chiefs Please Stand Up?” It’s a good post, and I’m in agreement with them.  I still don’t know what to make of this team.  There really isn’t a record that the Chiefs could end up with that would really shock me.

    • Todd Haley is still going for it on 4th down and I am still loving it.

    • So I said I’d lay off Happy Feet Cassel until he threw a pick, that didn’t take long, did it?  I know it’ been said and said, but the fact remains, he isn’t a good quarterback.

    • Why is it that punters can’t kick field goals and vice versa?  Maybe not all of them, but none of them?  There isn’t one guy who has both of those skills?  Am I the only one shocked at that?

    • I absolutely agree with your thought on Tamba Hali. I watch him or Derrick Johnson on every play and Tamba is either being wrestled to the ground on every play or being ripped around by his jersey. The amazing thing is that he is still getting to the quarterback.

    • I agree about Tamba… Hopefully those are some of the plays the Cheifs are sending to the NFL for review each week.

      Barbershop – That’s a nice story

    • The Tamba situation could be gaining some steam as St. John talked about it with Kendall Gammon this morning on the Border Patrol. St. John said he sees it about 5-10 times a game, but in my mind, it happens on nearly every other play. Of course, referees aren’t going to throw a flag on every play, but my hope is that officials will be on the lookout for this from now on.

    • There are surely kickers than can punt and vice versa, but the issue is you would still have to carry another kicker on the roster in case of injury. But it is shocking that there isn’t one good enought at both that a team would want them doing both. Perhapse there is, but they would rather them focus on one task since they will have to carry another kicker anyway and they arn’t a huge chunk of the team salary.
