Nick’s Chiefs Briefs: Week 11

What a difference a week makes in the NFL.  Last week, I was in utter despair over how the Chiefs were failing miserably and wasting their hot start, but then they win a game and the rest of the division flounders and thing begin to start looking much better.  Its a holiday weekend where everyone gets to eat way too much food which tastes way too good, so lets take a brief run around the web for the best articles about the Kansas City Chiefs.  Lets fill our pipe with the most aromatic tobacco and get into our briefs.

  • First off, you should be reading the other articles on the website you’re reading now.  If you aren’t then, you are probably just a huge fan of me and in that case, hi mom.  If you’re not my mom here are some highlights.  Jason Tarwater does a nice AFC West Recap in case you missed what happened in the division, and  Brian McGannon put together a nice recap of the game this week.

  • Dwayne Bowe had another fantastic week, putting up 109 yards and two touchdowns.  He currently has 715 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns on the season.  If he catches just one more touchdown this season, he will tie the all-time single season record for the Chiefs.  Chris Burfod had 12 touchdowns in 1962 a mark which was never matched by even Tony Gonzalez.  For a guy people were suggesting the Chiefs drop a few weeks ago, I’d say that’s pretty good.

    • Matt Cassel only has 4 interceptions to go with 18 passing touchdowns.  I think some credit is due on that front.  The guy is running the offense and he is controlling possession.  I’d still love an upgrade, but at this point I wouldn’t trade him for a number of starters, which isn’t something I’d have said a few weeks ago.

    • Joel Thorman at Arrowhead Pride writes about the fact that the NFLPA is sending letters to the Mayor of Kansas City and the Governor of Missouri to help get a dialogue going with the NFL owners.  This is a very, very bad sign.  The owners are being stubborn and the player have some real concerns.  Enjoy this season, because it could be the last one for a couple of years.  The owners need to give some ground, but they aren’t.

    • KC Chiefs Blog writes that this weeks national anthem was the best of the season.  I hear so many of these throughout the course of the year that when I hear a good one (which is rare), I do take notice.

    • Thanksgiving is this week, and it’s a great day for football.  You’re stuck with your family and some sporting events to deter your attention can be welcome relief.  I think it’s dumb that the Cowboys and Lions always get to play.  I’d like to see more Chiefs games on the big Thursday.

    • Kent Babb at the Kansas City Star writes some more about Dwayne Bowe.  I know I’ve already dropped a Brief about him, but he really is stepping up to the next level and we can’t talk too much about him.
      .
    • Sam Mellinger at the Star suggests that Matt Cassel isn’t so bad and uses the Cardinals QB by comparison.  I really can’t complain about his point, so I won’t.

    • We’re getting into “must win” territory now if the Chiefs hope to make the playoffs.  At Seattle, vs Denver then at San Diego.  I think they need two of three to feel comfortable, do you think they can do it.

    • This weeks Chiefs historical stat of the week:  Winningest Coach:  Hank Stram with 124 wins.

    • Four games may be enough to win the division but may depend on which for games the Chiefs win. If the Chiefs win the three division games left and one of the remaining games, they will be in solid shape. However, I think that all three of the non-division games should be won by the Chiefs.

As far as the impending struggle between the owners and the NFLPA, it doesn’t look good right now but I think greed will give way to sensibility. Ultimately, I don’t think that the owners will sabotage their own product. The NFL is way bigger and more valuable a league than it was the last time there was a strike. The owners worry about are the ones that own their own stadiums like Jerry Jones and Bob Kraft because they have the least to lose.

All the Thanksgiving games have one good team and one bad team. I get why the Cowboys play on Thanksgiving but why they don’t they have teams play that are more talented or popular play. I am alright with the Chiefs not playing on Thursday. I don’t think the players like playing so soon after their last game.

    • Wow, the NFLPA IS desperate. They’re writing Funkhouser – a guy who overall is a pretty ineffective mayor – and Nixon – the guy who declared MU was going to the Big 10 – to do ANYTHING is probably not a good sign.

      What’s next, getting Palin involved?

    • And no, I’m not trying to turn this into a political thing, just making some morning ha-ha’s

    • Thanks Nick, I think your articles are “nice” too.
