Matt Cassel injures ribs after being sacked in Green Bay

Matt Cassel to miss Chiefs Opener?

Matt Cassel left the final Chiefs pre-season game in Green Bay mid-way through the second quarter on Thursday night. Initially, it was thought Cassel simply had the wind knocked out of him.

If it were only that inconsequential. Cassel suffered an injury to his ribs.

Cassel’s injury means the offense will likely be turned over to Tyler Palko on September 11 when the Buffalo Bills visit Kansas City for the season opener. Palko has never started an NFL game.

Some local fans will definitely be calling for former Iowa Hawkeye rookie QB, Ricky Stanzi, to get the start over Palko. This will not happen for two reasons: 1 – Stanzi did not play at all in the final pre-season game against Green Bay. 2 – Stanzi is not very good.

Is Stanzi better than Palko? I do not know and, frankly, I do not care. The Chiefs need to find and convice a veteran to come in and run this offense for one week… Then maybe stay on to be Cassel’s backup for the season. A veteran backup QB is an area many Chiefs fans, writers and sports personalities have been begging for an upgrade. We shall find out in week 1 how big a need it truly is.

Ok now… With all of that being said, Matt Cassel will most likely play in the season opener. If you have learned nothing else about the Scott Pioli & Todd Haley reign, you have learned they follow the New England Patriots philosophy of lying about and misleading the public and opponents when it comes to injuries.
