That’s right, the Chiefs’ star cornerback Brandon Flowers is the AFC Defensive Player of the Week. Who would have thought? Flowers only had two interceptions against the Oakland Raiders, one of which was returned for 58 yards. No big deal.
Flowers also gained BIG bonus points in my book for posing in front of the Black Hole. His touchdown celebration got the Chiefs a 15 yard penalty, but it didn’t make a bit of difference because Jon McGraw intercepted a pass from Carson Palmer at the Chiefs’ 9 yard line to stop the deepest drive for Oakland into Kansas City territory of Palmer’s half.
Derrick Johnson could have just as easily been awarded as the Defensive Player of the Week for his 13 tackle outing against the Raiders.
I am not surprised that a Chief won the award this week. I am, however, surprised that Flowers didn’t get bombarded with flying poo due to all the birds flying in the Black Hole after he scored and posed. (See picture above, you’ll see what I mean.)
If the Chiefs can keep up this stellar performance on Monday Night against San Diego, I have no doubt that they will take the lead in the AFC West again. The offense has to keep improving and move the ball a little better than they did against Oakland, and the defense has to put pressure on Philip Rivers. But I see a very thick rally beard in my future. At least for the next few weeks. I wonder if the Chiefs team will follow in Todd Haley’s footsteps- seeing as how Tuesday will be the start of No-Shave November. It doesn’t seem to have hurt the team thus far.
