The Kansas City Chiefs failed horribly in their attempt to stay on top of the AFC West this afternoon at Arrowhead Stadium. The Denver Broncos beat the Chiefs 17-10 in a game that would appear to be close by the final score, but by no means was this game close in respect to on field play.
The Broncos came into this game with a clear plan: Run the ball, run the ball somemore, run again, and finally run until they stop you, which the Chiefs could not. The Chiefs defense could do nothing to stop the Broncos all day.Willis McGahee was injured early in the games when Knowshon Moreno took over carring the ball 4 times for 52 yards before he also left the game with an injury. Lance Ball took over and carried the rock 30 times for 96 yards. The Broncos carried the ball 55 times for 244 yards and averaged 4.4 yards per carry. The Chiefs defense looked sluggish all game long, even after it was apparent that Jon Fox did not want Tim Tebow to attempt passing. The Chiefs remained in the same defense the entire game and served as a red carpet for the Broncos to run over the entire game. Tim Tebow completed 2 of his 8 pass attempts for 69 yards, one of which was the dagger that did the Chiefs in when he connected with Eric Decker on a 56 yard touchdown pass. Rashard Langford played in the game today for the Chiefs for some extended time, he was beaten on the touchdown pass to Decker.
Offensively the Chiefs picked up where they left off last week vs. the Dolphins. Matt Cassel spent most of the day running for his life and taking an extraordinary amount of hits. Cassel did manage a spectacular play action fake on the Chiefs goaline that resulted in a LeRon McClain touchdown pass. Jackie Battle ran for 61 yards on 9 attempts, while Dexter McCluster led all receivers with 6 receptions for 48 yards. Jonathan Baldwin made an amazing catch as he trapped a ball between his hands and Brian Dawkins back and managed to hit the ground and keep possesion, however the play was negated due to an illegal formation penalty. Cassel ended the day with 13 completions for 93 yards and a touchdown. Tyler Palko came in at the end of the game, most likely due to an injury to Cassel. Cassel was sacked 4 times and was pursued relentlessly by Von Miller through out the day. Miller is living up to the hype. Palko completed 5 out of 6 passes for 47 yards.
This game was very painful to watch, the Broncos are not a good team, with that being said Kansas City may be the worst team in the AFC West after todays performance. The lack of talent at safety prevented the Chiefs from cheating up to play the run. Make no mistake, the Broncos came to Arrowhead with a strategy, and that strategy as simple as it was gave the Chiefs fits for all 4 quarters. The Broncos time of possesion was 33:38, John Fox had his team ready to eat the clock after they took the early lead. The Chiefs had some injuries in the game to Glenn Dorsey, Brandon Carr, and Matt Cassel. It doesnt get any easier for the Chiefs next week as they face the New England Patriots. Its time to start evaluations if you ask me, this off season should be very interesting. Lose the beard Todd Haley, perhaps if you would have shaved it last week, the Chiefs could have pulled it out today…probably not.
